Squash League Rules
Current league:
  • From 30 August 2009 till 3 October 2009.

Health and safety
  • When you feel you might hit your opponent, ask for a safety-let rather than executing the ball. When your opponent asks for a safety-let, be generous and grant it. Please bare in mind, that safety is first.
  • For more information on squash injuries and why we should play safe squash, please read this article on eye protection and squash.

General:
  • Groups will be set up approximately every 4-6 weeks
  • A group will usually consist of 5-7 players, playing each other once during the current period
  • A match will be consist of (a) 3 games (NOT a best-of-3) or (b) best-of-5. Each game will be played to 9 points each, regular scoring (not American scoring).
    • One point will be awarded for playing
    • One point will be awarded for each game won
    • One point will be awarded for each match won
    • One point will be awarded for the players that played more matches than the third most played player.
    • Two points will be awarded for playing all matches

Organizing a Match:
  • Please make contact with all your opponents as early as possible to ensure that you have enough time to complete all your matches.
  • Before the match is actually played, the lower ranked player should challenge the higher ranked through the League website. This is to ensure that (a) both of the players know that the match they are playing is the League match, and (b) both of them are able to report the match results afterwards.
  • Before playing, agree on whether you will play (a) 3 games (NOT a best-of-3) or (b) best-of-5. If this has not been agreed beforehand, then the match is invalid and should be played again.

Reporting Scores:
  • Report the scores through the League website as soon as possible after the match.
  • Report only results of games actually played.
  • No defaults or forfeits are allowed. Contact the section organiser in regards to dealing with "no shows"

Rules:
  • If player A plays multiple matches against player B, only the first match reported will be considered as an official match. Once the score has been reported, it will be the final score between player A and B for that season.
  • Generally, the winner and runner-up from each group will move up one level, while the bottom two will move down a level. The two remaining middle players stay in the same group for the following season.
  • In the case of a tie, the winner is the winner of the head-to-head match. In a three way tie, the winner is the player who allows the fewest points to the other players
  • Matches will be scheduled at a mutually agreeable time and place by both players
  • Matches may be played at any time during the season but must be completed and reported before midnight of the last day of the season.
  • Any player who fails to show for a match that has been mutually scheduled will be assessed as having lost the match 3-0.
  • The coordinator will verify the 'no show' by speaking with both players involved. The player who was present at the scheduled time will be allotted 5 points (a 3-0 win) and the match will count as being played for that person
  • Players may enter or exit the league by informing the coordinator before the beginning of the season they wish to enter or exit
  • If a player does not play three consecutive seasons, s/he will be automatically classified as a resting player and will be taken off the league.

New rating system
You will have noticed a points score appear next to player names on the rankings page (if logged in). This is a trial points rating system based on the classic Elo system. Players will be awarded points for winning and lose points for losing depending on how difficult the system calculates your opponent to be. It will take a few games to settle down the scoring system. Currently the rating is displayed for information purposes only but in future it will be possible to arrange the ladder ranking system around this points score.
